The Crafted Strongman

For years, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have worked together to craft a made-to-measure version of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a television show released last fall, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional security officer inexplicably chosen to “save” Russia from disorder. While he is called a different name, the message is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals frequently result in buttressing this same narrative instead of undercutting it. An adaptation based on a popular book aims to undermine the leader's mythology by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the focus to the spin doctors around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, Putin is shown as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to steady the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to take the top job. He replies is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking permanent power.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. Historically, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody ever begged him to take the job. The presidency was in essence a selection process with many contenders. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who planned to control the country in practice.

• Per a journalist who studied his rise, the chosen candidate merely met the necessary criteria: loyal, from the security services, and not a communist or a liberal.

Interestingly, the shift to framing him as a “spy” may in part have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond. His harder interpretation led local outlets and social media to draw visual parallels with Putin. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the growing tendency to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an star popular with Russian audiences, the authorities will not miss the chance to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its exclusion of mass protests, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes recent years, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

In Russian cinema, the president is frequently an omnipotent figure who never appears on screen. His influence is hinted at through portraits or orders from on high. In this new film, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally echo the exact legends it perhaps aims to question.
