For many years, each U.S. leader has strived to clear the US of its image as a coercive, imperialistic nation. Yet with his bombastic, repeatedly harsh conduct toward global partners, Donald Trump has swiftly revived that idea. In his administration, the Ugly American is returned.

Forceful Exercise of Power

Trump has done this by using American influence in aggressive and arrogant ways – by criticizing other countries’ policies and then promising to sanction them if they fail to submit to his demands. Trump is doing exactly what worldwide legal standards says national leaders shouldn’t be doing. He has repeatedly interfered into foreign nations' internal matters, pressuring their officials, condemning their strategies and disrespecting their autonomy. Regularly, Trump treats foreign nations as dependents of the America (and of his personal pride).

Roots of the "Negative Stereotype"

The phrase “the Ugly American” was brought to prominence by a book from 1958 with that title; it depicted the tactlessness and ineptness of US diplomats who frequently were unfamiliar with the tongue where they were stationed and infrequently communicated with the people there. As decades passed, this phrase was increasingly used to characterize insensitive and presumptuous US tourists and insensitive and arrogant US policies toward foreign countries.

Global Involvement

He has behaved like an unpleasant image in numerous instances. He intervened in Brazil’s internal affairs by essentially demanding it to discontinue the criminal charges of its right-leaning ex-leader (and personal friend) Jair Bolsonaro for conspiring to stage a coup to resume leadership. After Brazil refused the case – the ex-president was convicted and given a term to 27 years in jail – Trump imposed a half-rate duty on products from Brazil.

In the past few weeks, he has acted as the Unpleasant, even Unhinged, American toward America's neighbor when he expressed fury after viewing a broadcast advertisement, sponsored by the province of the regional government, that featured parts of a Ronald Reagan address critical of import taxes. To counter, Trump imposed an extra ten percent duty on items from the northern neighbor. This action increased the displeasure of Canadians who were previously upset about his ridiculous proposal to make Canada the additional U.S. state.

Trump has also tried to pressure the South American nation. He said the US would terminate assistance to that country after its president, Gustavo Petro, protested that the American forces had targeted a vessel from Colombia and resulted in a casualty as part of Trump’s campaign of targeting vessels allegedly transporting drugs. Employing harsh, unprofessional discourse, he labeled Colombia’s president an “narcotics chief”.

Armed Intimidation
