American Military Conducts Lethal Strike in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in 4 Deaths
As stated by a high-ranking defense official, the American military executed a fatal kinetic engagement on a boat in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a deadly attack on a vessel operated by a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no American forces were harmed.”
Context and Recent Actions
The statement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military buildup.
Only on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Tactics Amid Scrutiny
The administration has faced increasing demands to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a success, saying it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the bounds of legal military action.
Although the administration has stated the operation is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's sitting government.
