Are You Able to Solve It? That Overlooked Netherlands Creation That Shaped our Contemporary Globe
There are numerous candidates for the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a recent publication, however, that title belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, constructing a simple trading ship required around ten lumberjacks working over 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be produced within seven days.”
Thanks to their speedy mechanical cutter, that turned logs into boards using almost no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to construct vessels faster than anyone else, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Dutch maritime, financial and artistic dominance across Europe and the world.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Machine
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends the writer, was “humanity’s initial true factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. A single part transformed its rotary movement to up-and-down action for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism transformed that same spinning motion into a sideway’s movement advancing the log to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log forward a measured step each stroke.
“Each element was simple by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to combine them so the machine operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every descending motion while advancing with each upward stroke. It was an astonishingly clever application of basic components.”
Which brings us to today’s challenge. The task is you to reinvent one of the fundamental concepts behind Corneliszoon’s machine.
Circular to Vertical
Design a mechanism which converts rotary movement into vertical motion. You have these components only: A rotating disc. Two pins. Two rods. A “sleeve”, which is a tube or sleeve into which a single the rods will fit snugly. (Assume it is possible to mount components on a stand, so the parts don’t fall down.)
