A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
