Meteorologists are reporting a frosty commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Plans Go Ahead Amid Alerts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be needed," noted the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Open but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Readings are expected to be low, making additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for Friday

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are likely on public transport.

Readings Forecast to Plummet Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as snowfall and high winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Warnings Activated

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
