The megacity Awakens to Dangerous Haze After Celebrations
As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves breathing severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" level.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels
Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an air quality index above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the safe level established by the global health authority.
Particular areas, levels of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15 to 20 times above safe standards.
Pyrotechnics Ban and Current Developments
Since 2020, the government had maintained a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous haze that covers the city as winter approaches.
Yet earlier this year, the recently formed local government approached the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the ban.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a compromise between "heritage and environment".
Judicial Verdict and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of environmental and health campaigners, judges complied with the proposal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited hours throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable flouting of the designated hours across the city, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout the capital recorded air quality spiking around late evening to some of the worst readings seen during the festival in at least three years.
International Implications
The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the festival also sparked a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing worsening air quality in their urban centers on pollutants originating in India following the festivities.
Chronic Pollution Issue
The dangerously high concentrations of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a major problem for over a decade and a half, with the problem gradually deteriorating.
Near celebratory seasons, the amount of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been documented to spike to 70% higher the most severe levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the planet's dirtiest city.
Diverse Pollution Contributors
The situation in the city is attributed to a mix of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in nearby areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, farmers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the city as cooler air descends.
Medical and Economic Impact
The economic and health consequences on the approximately 33 million residents living in the capital region is significant, according to various research.
This pollution causes increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and lung conditions, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for approximately 10k untimely deaths annually in the capital.
