He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and rising, and this week research predicted his energy policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have attempted – really, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the White House to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, the majority of whom conduct transactions with public institutions.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the planet' to 'the humble will perish of cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the president try to upend the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this change developed more slowly, over decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the quickly increasing segment within America could have minimal awareness about him since they are non-believers or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically not the narrative of a mighty king arising; conversely, a baby is born to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape undercover officers. The child matures in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message concerns compassion for other people, particularly for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. Christ's response to aggression is to present the opposite cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a method to teach the assailant; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever an individual takes your jacket you ought to provide them your pullover too.
The evident and direct fact that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a form of extreme compassion focused on the needy is what has always made the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Best Among Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the steadfast resistance regarding Trump arise in this past year. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the movement that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the best parts in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or not?
The country is optimally secured, in other words, through connection to the finest within national tradition, just as Christianity is optimally secured through connection to elements that cause it to be distinctive and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus. In both situations does it suggest pretending the worst about the nation and Christian faith never occurred; it represents both meekness and conviction, a blend that committed national faithful should be comfortable with.
