When Sunbathers Fled Attack, Viral Image Captures Rescuer Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Location.
Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, has always considered the renowned beach as her own backyard. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, similar to other others in the area, detected loud noises ringing out through the suburb.
“Everyone did, but I considered it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. She left her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore made it clear trouble had occurred.
While standing on the avenue, conversing with a pair who had hurried up the hill still dripping wet, she heard someone approaching at her rear. The person was a lifeguard, sprinting towards Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.
“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone heading in the path that the crowd was trying to flee, while holding that large equipment and without footwear … He moved towards something that undoubtedly every instinct would tell you to go in the reverse way.
“Absolutely no pause, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”
A Powerful Moment of Heroism In the Wake of Crisis
The image taken by Ching of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous instances of heroism in the aftermath of the violent incident.
Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, police and paramedics attending to numerous the injured.

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the incident serving as a impromptu treatment center. Waverley council, the local authority that hires many professional lifeguards, said that the team performed exceptionally from the moment the violence started right into late that nighttime.
“People have shared so many emotional stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” said a council representative.
“The team show selflessness every day in keeping our internationally renowned beaches secure for the public, but what we witnessed on that day should be celebrated.
“During this time of sorrow and process the atrocity of this heinous act of violence, I think it is important that we focus on just how much positivity we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
