Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge certain decisions from the chair umpire, following the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
